NW Premier defends buying R1.3m BMW
Thandi Modise has come under fire for her purchase of a R1.3 million BMW.
JOHANNESBURG - North West Premier Thandi Modise's office has defended her purchase of a new BMW 750i, which cost R1.3 million, saying reports suggesting the acquisition was a snub at Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan's call for cost cutting are disingenuous, absurd and malicious.
The premier's office says the car was not acquired in defiance of the cabinet directive and was in fact ordered before the minister announced austerity plans in his mid-term budget speech.
Modise's spokesperson Lesiba Kgwele says the purchase was also in line with the ministerial handbook.
"The decision to purchase the vehicle was not a decision of the premier, but that of the Provincial Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport. The purchased vehicle was below the 70 percent limit prescribed by the ministerial handbook."
