JOHANNESBURG - Four Gauteng police constables are in custody after a man they arrested died.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) says the man was arrested by the officers for drunk driving on Christmas Day.

IPID spokesman Moses Dlamini says, "The deceased was certified dead by paramedics, who had been called to the police station. He had multiple injuries all over his body."

Dlamini says, "The officers alleged that the deceased resisted arrest and they eventually managed to arrest him and put him inside the back of a police van."

The officers transported him to the station for paper work and later took him to a district surgeon to draw his blood.

The IPID spokesman says, "They alleged that while transporting him he kicked the door of the van and injured himself in the process."

According to Dlamini, the police alleged that when they opened the door of the van after returning to the police station, the deceased "jumped out and injured his head and face".

The four constables are expected to appear in Ekangala Magistrates Court on Monday on charges of murder.
