Dept to try and resolve fishing impasse
A fishing association will meet with the department to try and resolve an impasse.
CAPE TOWN - The South African Commercial Linefish Association says it will be meeting with the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries on Tuesday in the hopes of resolving the impasse that has led to at least two attempted suicides.
Fishing rights that were extended in 2005 expired on New Year's Eve and fishermen were required to re-apply.
Association Chairperson Wally Croome says out of around 303 applications, only 115 permit holders were successful.
He says this was met with a great deal of shock, with some fishermen contemplating taking their own lives.
"If we talk to each other we may find common ground, but we cannot guarantee that. We don't know what the agenda is for Tuesday's meeting. But the fact that we're going to sit there and talk is a step in the right direction."
