JOHANNESBURG - Holidaymakers heading home have been urged to drive with caution and observe all road rules because there's an unusually high volume of traffic on national routes.

The Commercial Manager of the N3 Toll Road Company Con Roux says more than 1,800 vehicles have been counted passing through the Mooiplaass northbound toll plaza every hour.

Heavy traffic volumes have also been reported on the N3 northbound from KwaZulu Natal to Gauteng, the N1 between Polokwane and Pretoria and the N1 between Bloemfontein and Johannesburg, with more than 1,000 vehicles passing per hour.

Roux says motorists should exercise caution as traffic volumes are expected to increase into the night.

"Till up to two o' clock we're still at 1,800 vehicles an hour. In other words, motorists who are going to be returning in the dark this evening, we ask them particularly to slow down and observe safe following distances."
