JOHANNESBURG - Chaos has erupted outside the Brakpan Magistrates Court this morning where a 23-year-old man accused of raping and killing his four-year-old niece appeared.

Jasmin Pretorius was found raped and murdered at her father's home in Brakpan at the weekend.

Dozens of community members pelted a police nyala believed to be transporting the suspect with rubble.

Angry community members then tried to force their way into the armed vehicle.

At least one person was injured.

Some family members left the courtroom in tears.

The case was postponed until 7 January.

Pretorius, who was living with her mother, was picked up by her father on Friday to spend the weekend with him in Brakpan.

Police suspect her uncle raped and murdered her on Saturday morning.

She was reported missing the same day.

After an intensive search, authorities found her under a bed in the house.

Meanwhile, Women, Children and People with Disabilities Minister, Lulu Xingwana has reacted with shock and anger to the crime.

Her spokesperson Motalatale Modiba said the court should deny the suspect bail and give him the harshest sentence possible.

"The minister has called on the courts and the justice system to be swift and firm when sentencing whoever is found guilty of this crime."
