JOHANNESBURG - A 23-year-old man is expected to appear in a Johannesburg court this morning in connection with the rape and murder of his four-year-old niece.

Jasmin Pretorius was found raped and murdered at her father's home in Brakpan at the weekend.

Pretorius, who was living with her mother, was picked up by her father on Friday to spend the weekend with him in Brakpan.

Police suspect her uncle raped and murdered her on Saturday morning.

She was reported missing the same day.

After an intensive search, authorities found her under a bed in the house.

Police are hoping to make more arrests in connection with the incident.

Meanwhile, Women, Children and People with Disabilities Minister, Lulu Xingwana has reacted with shock and anger to the crime.

Her spokesperson Motalatale Modiba says the court should deny the suspect bail and give him the harshest sentence possible.

"The minister has called on the courts and the justice system to be swift and firm when sentencing whoever is found guilty of this crime."
