JOHANNESBURG - Seven time formula one champion Michael Schumacher has reportedly been airlifted to hospital after he was involved in a skiing accident at the French resort of Meribel.

Reports indicate that he has a serious head injury but the severity at this stage is unclear, although reports are indicating that the director of the resort has told Radio Monte Carlo Sport that Schumacher was wearing a helmet and hit his head against a rock.

The 44-year-old German quit Formula One last year after a three-year comeback with Mercedes following his earlier retirement from Ferrari.
