JOHANNESBURG - A 19-year-old North West man accused of raping his 10-year-old neighbour will remain behind bars for the rest of the festive season.

This after he was denied bail in the Itsoseng Magistrates Court on Friday afternoon.

The crime allegedly took place on Christmas Day.

Police say the man asked his neighbour to accompany him to a nearby village before stopping at an open veld and raping her.

The girl made it home and told her mother who then took her to a nearby hospital where it was confirmed she was raped.

The police's Pelonomi Makau says the man is expected back in court on 6 January.

After news of the crime, North West Premier Thandi Modise called for the harshest sentences for rapists, especially those who prey on young children.

She described the act as ghastly and said the girl was robbed of her innocence.
