South Africa's best hope for victory in this year's Dakar Rally, Giniel De Villiers, is dedicating his rally this year to Nelson Mandela.

De Villiers narrowly missed a win in last year's Dakar, having secured the top spot in 2009.

He was in the process of preparing for the 2014 endurance event when he learnt of Madiba's death and, to honour South Africa's greatest leader, his Toyota Hilux will feature an image of the statesman.

Watch the video to hear about De Villiers' own special Madiba moment.

Eyewitness News will be following travelling with De Villiers and the rest of the Toyota Imperial Team. We'll be charting their progress and that of the rest of Dakar 2014's daring field, every kilometre of the way.
