JOHANNESBURG - A 32-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly raping a 20-year-old woman in Soweto.

The crime allegedly took place on Monday night when the victim was walking home from a party.

She was attacked and dragged into a nearby veld.

The police's Kay Makhubela says a passersby came to the aid of the victim.

"People who were passing by heard screams and went over to investigate. When they got to the scene, he managed to get away. Fortunately, the victim and those who tried to chase him knew who he was."

The suspect will appear in the Protea Magistrates Court.

Several people, including children and the elderly, have been raped throughout the country in the past year.

The Minister for Women, Children and People with Disabilities Lulu Xingwana called for harsher sentences for rapists.
