550 road deaths this December alone
The Road Traffic Management Corporation called on motorists to drive responsibly.
JOHANNESBURG - At least 550 deaths have been recorded on South African roads since the start of December, the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) confirmed on Tuesday.
It says at least 459 fatal accidents have been recorded nationwide.
RTMC acting chief executive officer (CEO) Gilberto Martins says dangerous overtaking and speeding were contributing factors.
"There was an arrest made in KwaZulu-Natal where a motorist in a BMW was caught driving at 221km/h on the south coast on the N2."
Authorities have urged motorists to drive responsibly.
