CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape government on Sunday thanked the people of the province for their excellent behaviour during the period of mourning for the late Nelson Mandela.

The former statesman was laid to rest in Qunu earlier on Sunday.

The Western Cape government played host to several memorial events in the lead up to Mandela's funeral.

Cultural Affairs MEC Ivan Meyer says all the events took place with no major incidents reported.

He thanked people for their behaviour.

"We are really living the legacy of Mr Mandela with unity and diversity, respect and dignity. My heart goes out to all the people of the Western Cape. I want to thank them for excellent behaviour."

The City of Cape Town will conclude Mandela events with a remembrance walk on Cape Town's fan walk route on Monday.
