CAPE TOWN - It may still take a few hours before the N1 highway is reopened to traffic, Western Cape traffic officials confirmed on Friday.

The highway has been closed in both directions following two accidents this morning.

Both took place on a stretch of road near Laingsburg often dubbed "the road of death."

Seven people, including four children, died when a minibus taxi and a bus collided.

Western Cape Traffic Chief Kenny Africa says three people died in the second incident when two trucks collided.

"We've got a long backup of traffic on both sides. We are trying to assist motorists by using a farm road. The N1 is still closed."
