JOHANNESBURG - Ster-Kinekor cinemas across South Africa will open later on Sunday, in light of former president Nelson Mandela's funeral.

Cinemas will now open after 12pm.

Ster-Kinekor CEO Fiaz Mohamed says this is the least they can do to honour Madiba, who passed away on Thursday last week.

The day after Mandela passed away, Ster-Kinekor chose not to screen the film Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom as a sign of respect.

Mohamed says he wants to give his staff the opportunity to experience the funeral.

"We're providing an opportunity for our staff to spend some time in their own way to celebrate his life and be part of the procession that takes place for our great father."
