Mandela events: Brief information guide
Eyewitness News breaks down the official events leading up to Madiba’s funeral.
This basic guide on the events leading up to and including the state funeral of former president Nelson Mandela will help you know what's planned and where it will happen.
Saturday 14 December: Focus shifts to the Eastern Cape.
The former president's remains will be transported to the Eastern Cape from Waterkloof Air Force Base in Pretoria.
A procession will then take place from Mthatha to Qunu where the Thembu community will conduct a traditional ceremony.
Sunday 15 December: State Funeral. Qunu. 8am.
The official state funeral service and interment ceremony will take place at President Mandela's home town and final resting place at Qunu in the Eastern Cape.
The public is advised that all the event venues will be cordoned off and access will be controlled.
Most of the key events will be broadcast live on television and a number of public viewing areas will be established at various points around the country to allow as many people as possible to follow and witness these historic occasions.
Government requests mourners to give the organising authorities their fullest cooperation to ensure all events are dignified, befitting for Madiba.
