'Jika' success unexpected
Mi Casa says it has a number of exciting surprises planned for the new year.
CAPE TOWN - Mi Casa says it is overwhelmed by the success of its most recent single Jika.
The group is made up of vocalist and guitarist Joao Fonseca, popularly known by his stage name J'Something, trumpeter Moshe Kgasoane, better known as Mo-T, and producer and resident DJ D. Duda.
Jika has claimed the number one spot on a number of local radio stations and most notably on digital BBC radio station 1Xtra. It also climbed to number one on MTV Base and Trace TV.
Mo-T told Eyewitness News the song has become a summer anthem, not only locally but internationally.
"Jika's success has been crazy - it has hit number one on charts all over including the UK. This is the song that's really proven Mi Casa rocks and will continue doing so."
Mi Casa released its second album Su Casa in August and has since been touring throughout Africa.
Mo-T said the group's Africa tour is nearly wrapped up with a final stop in Botswana lined up.
He added the trio is going to be extremely busy throughout the festive season with shows planned across the country.
He also said Mi Casa has big plans for next year.
"There are a number of surprises in the pipeline and we can't wait."
The 25-year-old said the trio still can't believe how far they have come in such a short time in the industry.
He added all the success can be a bit daunting at his age.
"It makes me wonder what is going to happen when I am 30 or 40."
Mo-T said the trio manages to keep their feet on the ground by constantly reminding themselves where they come from.
"We just have our secret recipe of staying humble and that's what makes people want to engage with us even more."
The group joined local music heavyweight Lira in performing for US President Barack Obama in January at the first of several inauguration balls at the Mead Centre for American Theatre in Washington.
Mi Casa won three South African Music Awards in 2012, just a year after the group was formed.
