PRETORIA - Christiaan Oldewage has been found guilty of murder and child abuse following the death of his three-week-old stepson in December 2011.

The ruling was handed down in the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria on Wednesday.

Baby Stiaan had a shattered skull, 16 fractured ribs, extensive internal injuries and bleeding.

The infant died in hospital.

Judge Bert Bam says Oldewage failed to convince the court he didn't beat his stepson.

He rejected Oldewage's version that the baby's face was scratched and ribs were fractured because a cat jumped on the child.

The court also found that Oldewage lied when he testified the baby looked "happy" the day before his death.

The state successfully argued the couple had beaten the child so severely he died from the injuries.

Prosecutors said Oldewage showed no remorse and should be jailed for a minimum of 25 years.

But Oldewage argues he's is a first time offender and this must be taken into account during sentencing on Thursday.

The baby's mother, Juanita Fourie, committed suicide in August.

Shortly before her death, she complained that she received death threats and had lost everything because of the matter.
