Belhar pensioners get title deeds
Elderly Belhar residents have finally become the official owners of their homes.
CAPE TOWN - There is a festive mood at the Belhar Community Hall as dozens of pensioners become official home owners of houses they have been living in for decades.
Western Cape MEC for Human Settlements Bonginkosi Madikizela handed over more than 200 title deeds.
With their ages ranging from 50 to 97, they smiled as they receive the title deeds to their homes from Madikizela.
Many have been waiting for this moment for years.
Madikizela is under pressure from informal settlement activists who are demanding houses.
He has hit back saying while government continues to do its best in delivering homes, people should not just sit back expecting to be given everything for free.
Meanwhile, thousands of people from informal settlements are expected to march to the CBD later this month demanding housing and sanitation.
