CAPE TOWN - The lawyer representing Johannes Kana, the man convicted of the rape and murder of Bredasdorp teenager Anene Booysen, says an application appealing the judgment will be filed today.

Kana was found guilty and given a double life sentence in the Swellendam Circuit Court last month.

He raped, mutilated and left 17-year-old Booysen for dead at a construction site in February after they'd been drinking with friends at a local pub.

His lawyer Pieter du Toit says, "We'll hand in the application for leave to appeal and the registrar then provides us with a date. We would like to have this case behind us and it seems it's going to drag on for a while longer."

During his trial, Kana maintained that while he did rape the teenager, he did not kill her.
