CAPE TOWN - The man convicted of killing Bredasdorp teenager Anene Booysen on Monday lodged an appeal against his ruling in the Western Cape High Court.

Johannes Kana sexually assaulted, mutilated and left the 17-year-old for dead at a construction site in February.

Kana's lawyer says he hopes the court will grant them permission to appeal the ruling handed down to his client.

The 22-year-old was found guilty and given a double life sentence in the Swellendam Circuit Court in November.

Lawyer Pieter du Toit says Kana is exercising his right to appeal.

He says the application was filed earlier on Monday.

"We filed the application at the high court. It's filed with the registrar of the judge and it's filed with public prosecutions as well."

Kana confessed to raping Booysen but denied killing her.

He is serving his sentence in Bloemfontein.
