Philippi fire victims rebuild homes
The blaze broke out on Wednesday evening.
CAPE TOWN - Clean-up operations continue in Philippi on Thursday following a massive shack fire in the area.
The blaze broke out on Wednesday evening.
The fire left more than 200 people destitute.
Some shack owners have lashed out saying they are tired of living in squalor.
They vowed to join in on a planned protest in December.
While a tractor is busy cleaning the area, residents are standing huddled together in groups, many of them agitated.
It is still not clear what caused the fire, which also damaged nearby RDP houses.
City of Cape Town officials are on the scene assisting people with building material.
Residents say while shack fires are a common occurrence, it is the first time so many homes have been gutted at the same time.
