Hawks probe cross-border drug syndicate
Two men were arrested on Wednesday for possession of drugs with a street value of R75m.
JOHANNESBURG -The Hawks have confirmed that two men arrested for possession of drugs with a street value of more than R75 million are part of a syndicate distributing drugs between Tanzania and South Africa.
The suspects are scheduled to appear in court this morning.
They were arrested during a sting operation in Kempton Park on the East Rand on Wednesday.
The men were found in possession of 20kg of heroin, 15kg of cocaine and 15kg of kat with an estimated street value of R75 million.
It's believed the drugs were destined for Gauteng's East Rand and other parts of Johannesburg.
The Hawk's Anwa Dramat says authorities expect to arrest more people believed to be involved in the syndicate.
Dramat said his elite crime-fighting body aims to close in on all drug dealers this festive season.
