Mandela film breaks box office record
The film smashed the gross earning of last week’s release of the latest Hunger Games instalment.
JOHANNESBURG - The film, _ Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom_, has sprinted its way to the top of the South African box office, breaking a record on its way.
South African audiences have responded overwhelmingly to the movie about former president Nelson Mandela's life, resulting in the film opening at number one on Thursday.
It also out-grossed last Thursday's opening of the eagerly anticipated Hunger Games: Catching Fire by 39 percent.
It made over R750,000 with a massive daily screen average of R8,620, a record for a Thursday outside of school holidays, especially as the film has only four shows compared with six for other movies.
The film's producers say they are proud a South African film is competing so well against one of the most anticipated sequels of all time.
"It is extremely gratifying for us as filmmakers to have our home audience embrace our film and react so positively to it. We are proud that a South African film is competing so well against one of the most anticipated sequels of all time," producer Anant Singh says. Click here for a review on the film.
