JOHANNESBURG - Many Gauteng residents are assessing the damage after severe storms with hail lashed parts of the province.

Cars and homes were destroyed by hail and road flooding was reported in areas.

Eyewitness News was inundated with calls from motorists and residents.

Gauteng's West Rand was particularly affected by the severe weather.

In one incident, a car carrying an unknown number of passengers was swept off the road in the area.

Massive hail stones fell in parts of Krugersdorp.

In Soweto, Kagiso and even Pretoria, roofs were damaged, some fully ripped off, and many shacks were completely demolished.

Officials say they are working tirelessly to assist those residents affected by the severe thunderstorms, which also caused heavy traffic jams and affected air travel.

The South African Weather Service placed the province on high alert warning residents to expect strong winds and hail.

It says the worst is over for Gauteng.

But the storm has moved towards Limpopo and the North West Province.
