N Cape drought affecting livestock
Northern Cape livestock farmers have been hit by the worst drought in the region since the 1930s.
CAPE TOWN - Agri Northern Cape says it's very worried about the extremely dry weather conditions gripping some parts of the province.
Livestock farmers have been hit hard by the worst drought in the region since the 1930s.
Agri Northern Cape CEO Johan van Rensburg says they are uncertain whether they'll receive any financial assistance from local government.
"There's no financial assistance available. The province hasn't made a decision on it, so we don't know whether there'll be funds available to assist the farmers."
He says some areas in the province haven't experienced any rainfall since the beginning of the year.
Van Rensburg says the ongoing weather could have a negative impact on the price of meat in the long run.
Meanwhile, the Democratic Alliance's shadow Minister for Agriculture Annette Steyn says urgent government intervention is needed to assist farmers in drought stricken areas.
