CAPE TOWN - Western Cape police say they won't be investigating an incident in which a suspected shoplifter was assaulted by a group of men in Mitchells Plain.

The beating, which was caught on video, shows a man being slapped around and humiliated for allegedly stealing biscuits.

The footage of the assault surfaced online on Tuesday.

The local Community Policing Forum (CPF) has condemned the incident and has handed the footage over to the South African Police Service (SAPS).

But police say no one has opened a case.

Meanwhile, Provincial Community Safety MEC Dan Plato says he's disturbed by the incident.

"The proof needs to be handed over to the police so that they can lay the necessary charges against those people responsible. Those people need to be dealt with in an appropriate manner. "
