CAPE TOWN - A penalty has been imposed for all late return submissions for the 2013 tax season.

Taxpayers had until Friday last week to file their returns and late submissions now face a penalty of R250.

More than 4 million people submitted their returns this year.

South African Revenue Services (SARS) spokesperson Adrian Lackay says they encourage people to pay as soon as possible.

"For as long as these tax returns remain outstanding it will draw interest every month. We really want to encourage people to rather come forward and make arrangements to pay off tax debts from previous years.

"If you have any returns outstanding from previous years or if you have any tax debt outstanding from previous years the amount of the penalty will increase."
