Long-distance runner Sonja Laxton Laxton underwent two surgeries at the Milpark Hospital last week after being knocked down in a hit-and-run.

JOHANNESBURG - The family of long-distance runner Sonja Laxton says although she still has a long recovery ahead of her, the 65-year-old is making progress.

Laxton underwent two surgeries at the Milpark Hospital last week after being knocked down in a hit-and-run.

Her husband Ian Laxton says, "She's doing okay physically. It's a big long road and she has so many injuries and she cannot get over them in a week. It's a whole mental thing that she has to get over."

The driver, who sped away after the incident, was later arrested after an eyewitness provided police with details of his car.
