JOHANNESBURG - A Soweto primary school teacher is expected to make his first court appearance on a charge of rape this morning.

A 10-year-old boy claims he was raped at the Sediba-Thuto Primary School in Mapetla by the teacher who was arrested when he arrived for class on Thursday morning.

It's understood the incident occurred when the boy was asked to stay after class because he hadn't completed his homework.

The Gauteng Education Department's Phumla Sekhonyane has condemned the incident.

"We condemn sexual offences against children in the strongest of terms. We view the allegations in a very serious light and as such we have initiated a process of suspension and will conduct our own independent investigation so that we can formulate the charges."
