Deadline day for tax returns

SARS expects a last-minute rush as thousands race to submit their tax returns before 4pm.

SARS says it expects a last-minute rush as thousands race to submit their tax returns before 4pm today.

CAPE TOWN - The South African Revenue Service (SARS) says it expects an eleventh hour rush as thousands of taxpayers race to submit their tax returns.

Taxpayers have until 4pm this afternoon to ensure they submit their returns, either at SARS branches across the country or via e-filing.

By Thursday afternoon, more than 4 million people had already submitted their returns.

Spokesperson Adrian Lackey said, "I'm appealing to taxpayers; if you know you're going to need help from a SARS branch office please get there in good time. We want to ensure that we help any taxpayer who needs assistance."

He says people have a little more time if they intend using e-filing.

"By 4pm we'll have closed the lines and offices. If you're going to use e-filing, you can do so until 12am and it will still be regarded as a return submitted on time."
