PPA pleased with WC cyclist regulation
As of today, WC motorists must stay at least one metre away from cyclists.
CAPE TOWN - The Pedal Power Association (PPA) says while it is pleased about the passing of a new cycling law in the Western Cape, some of the details need to be tweaked.
As of today motorists must stay at least one metre away from cyclists.
In terms of the new law cyclists are also required to change their behaviour and are not permitted to ride next to one another. Cyclists have also barred from wearing headsets and earphones.
The PPA's Steven Hayward says while they welcomed the new regulations, they believe the distance of one metre between cars and cyclists isn't enough.
"We're very pleased that the Western Cape government has given recognition to cyclists on the road. But 1.5 metres is an international best practice in the world and we believe that's the safe distance because there's scientific proof of that."
