JOHANNESBURG - Four men linked to a brazen hijacking in the Johannesburg city centre have been detained by police and taken in for questioning.

The attack happened in full view of other motorists at the intersection of Commissioner Street and Crown Street last week.

The incident was captured on CCTV cameras.

The footage, sourced from a private security company, shows a Volkswagen Polo blocking the family's car from the front while an Opel Corsa parks behind it, preventing it from moving.

The family is then violently forced out of their vehicle by at least four men, one of them carrying an AK47.

The hijackers then made off with the family's car, cash and cellphones.

The police's Lungelo Dlamini says the men were arrested on Wednesday and two vehicles, including the SUV that was hijacked, have been recovered.

"The suspects have not yet been charged but we believe they have been involved in other cases."

The footage has since gone viral.
