The Boland golfer set the early first round target at six-under-par 66 at the Glendower Golf Club.
CAPE TOWN - Boland golfer Christiaan Basson set the early first round target at six-under-par 66 at Glendower Golf Club in Johannesburg.
He carded one eagle and four birdies in his blemish-free first round at the South African Open.
Basson shot two birdies on his first nine and in the second half of his round he made birdies on the 11th and 13th and eagled the 15th.
"I am very happy. It's nice to not make a bogey on your card. I just tried to play percentage golf out there and managed to make a couple of birdies and a nice eagle," Basson said.
One shot behind the leader is Charl Schwartzel who carded a score of 67 in the opening round.
The 2011 Masters champion made three birdies on his first nine and two more on the second half of the round.
Three players ended their round on four under par up, two shots behind the leader.
They are Englishmen Steve Surry and Simon Dyson as well as local Warren Abery.
