JOHANNESBURG - Bafana Bafana have surprised world champions Spain in an international friendly at FNB Stadium on Tuesday night by winning 1-0.

The goal came from Bernard Parker who chipped Victor Valdez to claim a famous victory for the South African football team in the second half of the game.

The Spanish had started the brighter of the two sides.

Striker David Villa found the back of the net but was ruled offside.

It took a while for South Africa's players to settle but once they did they began creating good chances.

The first chance was in the 16th minute when Tokelo Rantie made a good run into the box but failed to do anything from there to trouble the goalkeeper.

The world champions dominated the first half, though Bafana came closest when Oupa Manyisa hit the crossbar with a deflected shot.

The 2013 South African Sports Star of the Year, Itumeleng Khune, was at his best again, denying Alvaro Arbeloa deep into stoppage-time to secure a win.

Meanwhile, Bafana coach Gordon Igesund had said he expected Spain to play to their strengths.

Igesund expected the world and European champions to play very competitively.
