JOHANNESBURG - Seismologists have confirmed a magnitude four tremor shook large parts of Johannesburg this morning.

Eyewitness News has been inundated with calls from residents with some describing loud bangs and shaky grounds.

It is not clear what caused the tremor which was felt in areas including Emmarentia, Northcliff, Kempton Park, Westgate and parts of Soweto.

Council for Geoscience's Michelle Grobbelaar said, "We've located it very close to the University of Johannesburg. However, this is still preliminary. We are still in the process of obtaining more data. We are downloading from all our stations and then we will get a human eye to look at it."

Witnesses described what they heard and felt in their neighbourhoods.

"I live on the Greymond side of the NorthCliff Hill. A few minutes ago there was a tremendous cracking sound and then a dreadful vibration," one woman explained.

"I live in Emmarentia Extension 1 and we felt the earth tremor so everything shook in our house," said another.
