JOHANNESBURG - The mother and step-father of a seven-month-old baby, who was found dead in Diepsloot, have appeared in the Pretoria Magistrates Court on Thursday.

The baby boy's body was discovered at his home on Sunday after was left alone overnight.

The two were arrested this week.

Both have applied for a state lawyer to represent them in the case.

The man, a 35-year-old Mozambican national, told the court he had nothing to do with the child's death.

The suspects will remain in custody until their next court appearance on Wednesday.

Community members made it clear the woman is no longer welcome in Diepsloot.

Angry residents destroyed her shack earlier this week.

In October, two cousins were raped and murdered while another baby was found dead in a stream, causing an outcry over negligence and crimes against children in the northern Johannesburg township.
