Fire at JHB student accommodation
It’s unknown what caused the fire at the Mariston Hotel building in the Johannesburg CBD.
JOHANNESBURG - Hundreds of students have been evacuated from a building in the Johannesburg CBD after a room caught fire.
It's still unclear what caused the blaze at the student accommodation, known as the Mariston Hotel, which spread across one of the top floors.
Emergency service spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi says they're on the scene.
"Right now, we're busy extinguishing the fire which started on the ninth floor. We managed to evacuate the people on that particular floor."
Mulaudzi says an investigation into the cause of the fire will begin as soon as it's been extinguished.
Earlier this week, a Rhodes University student passed away in hospital after sustaining serious injuries during a fire the previous week at his private student flat.
Alvin Ziyambi, 23, underwent surgery at a Port Elizabeth hospital and placed on a dialysis machine but did not survive.
Students have reportedly been leaving flowers outside his flat.
