JOHANNESBURG - People often use the phrase "hail the size of golf balls" loosely, using poetic licence to exaggerate the storms they saw.

A hailstorm hit several areas on Gauteng's East Rand on Monday evening bringing with it hailstones the size of, well, golf balls.

Scanning Twitter, it was easy to find photos posted by people whose homes or cars had been damaged by the hail.
