Diepsloot child attacked by rats
The body of a seven-month-old baby was found in Diepsloot after being attacked by rats.
JOHANNESBURG - Child negligence in Diepsloot is back in the spotlight after the death of another baby in the area.
The body of the seven-month-old baby boy was discovered by community members in a shack early yesterday morning.
It's understood he'd been left alone by his mother overnight.
The police's Tsekiso Mofokeng says the child was attacked by rats.
"After the investigation the police realised the baby's foot was eaten by rats."
Police are still searching for the mother.
Mofokeng said she was charged with negligence in September.
Meanwhile, a woman is expected to appear in the Heidelberg Magistrates Court this morning for allegedly poisoning and murdering her two daughters.
The bodies of the one-year-old and three-year-old sisters were found in a disused building in Katlehong on the East Rand last month.
Esther Moyana was found lying next to her daughters' bodies and was admitted to hospital in critical condition.
She then told police the father of her children was to blame.
But police say she lied and witnesses say the father wasn't even near the township at the time.
The police say they believe there had been domestic issues between the parents.
Police also say the father has been helping them in the investigation.
A string of violent crimes against children in Diepsloot and across the country have caused a public outcry in recent weeks.
Last week, Siphamandla Madikane's half burnt and naked body was found in a Reiger Park veld on Monday after he was reported missing the day before.
He disappeared from a friend's house in the Ramaphosa informal settlement the night before.
In October, the bodies of Diepsloot cousins Zandile and Yonalisa Mali were found dumped inside a communal toilet.
A day later, a newborn baby was dumped in a local stream in Diepsloot extension 6.
Also in October, the decapitated body of 15-year-old Lee Adams was found in an abandoned school in Ravensmead.
He was killed in an apparent satanic attack.
