CAPE TOWN - Cape Town and Johannesburg are ranked amongst the cities in the world which suffer the most from traffic congestion.

The TomTom South Africa Traffic Index shows that from a group of 169 cities, Johannesburg is the 20th most congested city while Cape Town came in at number 45.

The organisation used data generated automatically by millions of users of its GPS mapping devices, which is used to create real-life maps of driving patterns.

The TomTom manager Daan Hendrickx said, "The morning peaks are the worst peaks to travel and amazingly enough Cape Town stands out compared to Johannesburg at 92 percent, which means that if you travel in Cape Town in the morning you almost have to double your travel time."
