MEC: Wire murder shocking
A three-year-old boy was allegedly killed with a wire by an eight-year-old boy he was playing with.
CAPE TOWN - The Provincial Social Development Department says it has offered trauma counseling to the family of a 3-year-old Mfuleni boy who was allegedly killed by his 8-year-old friend.
Liyabona Mgexbo was stabbed with a piece of wire.
The incident occurred while the boys were playing on Monday. Police are investigating a murder case.
MEC Albert Fritz has described the incident as shocking.
"Our social workers have already been deployed to assist the family. There are a number of these unfortunate incidents occurring in our society. Parents also need to play their role as proper role models."
Meanwhile, a crime prevention NGO says incidents like these once again highlight the levels of violence in communities.
National Institution for Crime Prevention and Reintegration of Offenders Jaques Simbomana says, "It's quite a serious and shocking thing to see children as young as eight or nine committing serious crimes. But it is also driven by the things they have seen in their society."
