CAPE TOWN - Parliament on Wednesday paid tribute to outgoing Auditor General Terence Nombembe.

He was the guest of honour at a farewell function hosted by National Assembly Speaker Max Sisulu.

Nombembe's term will finish at the end of November.

A song of praise for Nombembe was followed by heartfelt tributes.

Sisulu described Nombembe as, "A soft-spoken, gentle and thorough auditor general, committed to his profession."

He said the auditor set the highest standard for good and accountable governance.

Nombembe is the first black person to hold the post since it was established in 1911.

Kimi Makwetu, the current deputy auditor general, will take over from Nombembe.
