NUM shop steward dies after being shot
Former union member Percy Letanang was shot seven times by unknown gunmen.
JOHANNESBURG - A former National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) shop steward has died in hospital after he was shot at Lonmin's Marikana mine in Rustenburg.
The NUM says Percy Letanang was shot seven times by unknown gunmen on Sunday.
There's been ongoing tension in the North West mining region between the NUM and its rival union, the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu), since violence erupted in August last year.
The NUM's Livhuwani Mammburu says their members are being targeted.
"We can't tell what the reason is behind these murders. We're surprised at our shop stewards being killed like this. We also want to know why they are being targeted."
Lonmin has been the focus of various violent incidents involving mine workers since 34 were shot and killed by police during a strike in August 2012.
