JOHANNESBURG - An additional two pupils are now facing a charge of murder for allegedly killing their fellow classmate during an altercation at a school last week, KwaZulu-Natal confirmed on Wednesday.

Cellphone footage of 18-year-old Bongani Nkabinde being speared to death went viral.

The footage has raised further concerns around safety in schools.

Initially, three pupils were arrested for killing Nkabinde.

Officials on Wednesday confirmed two others would also face charges.

All the suspects, excluding one learner, are all over the age of 18.

The suspects briefly appeared in court where the case was postponed to 19 November for a formal bail application.

The group started fighting with Nkabinde after assembly last Monday at Sizimele High School.

The pupils were allegedly fighting over a girl.

Cellphone footage of the fight shows Nkabinde being speared to death with a sharp object.

It is understood there are two rival gangs at the school.

Pupils are known to bring homemade weapons to class.

South African schools have been rocked by incidents of violence in recent months.

A grade 12 pupil was injured during a fight at a Pretoria school in October.

Oamogetswe Mgidi lost a part of his ear after he was assaulted by a group of boys from another school.
