Mangaung prison under scrutiny
Correctional Services is probing claims prisoners were forcibly injected and electroshocked by warders.
CAPE TOWN - The Department of Correctional Services says the person responsible for oversight at the Mangaung Correctional Centre outside Bloemfontein is being investigated.
The department took over control of the prison in October from private security company G4S.
The G4S-run private prison was placed under administration by the department following two weeks of violence where at least five people, mostly wardens, were stabbed and a senior female guard was taken hostage by prisoners.
The department is investigating claims inmates were being forcibly injected with anti-psychotic medication and warders were using electroshocks to control prisoners.
The facility is one of two prisons in the country managed through a private-public partnership.
Acting National Commissioner for Correctional Services Nontsikelelo Jolingana says the allegations are being looked into.
"As these incidents come forward we realised that there are things that the controller was supposed to do that were not done."
