Gungubele urges parents to be vigilant
The Ekurhuleni mayor says he is devastated by 10-year-old Siphamandla Madikane’s murder.
JOHANNESBURG - Ekurhuleni Mayor Mondli Gungubele on Wednesday appealed to parents to be more vigilant when it comes to the whereabouts of their children.
His comments come after 10-year-old Siphamandla Madikane was found dead in the veld in Reiger Park on Gauteng's East Rand on Monday.
The boy was reported missing after disappearing from a friend's house in the Ramaphosa informal settlement on Sunday night.
Madikane's half burnt and naked body was found next to a used condom.
Gungubele says he is shocked and devastated at the way the boy's life was taken away.
He called on authorities to do everything in their power to find those responsible for the crime.
The mayor's spokesperson Zweli Dlamini says, "He [Gungubele] has called on the community to help the police in terms of finding the perpetrators and locking them up as soon as possible."
Madikane's murder is the latest in a string of attacks on children.
In October, two young cousins were found murdered in Diepsloot.
A day later, the body of another child was found in an abandoned building in Katlehong.
Women, Children and People with Disabilities Minister Lulu Xingwana called on the justice system to deal harshly with those who abuse and kill children.
