Pilot project active after Buttskop tragedy
WC Transport plans to roll out CCTV enforcement at dangerous level crossings.
CAPE TOWN - Western Cape Transport MEC Robin Carlisle says there are plans to roll out CCTV camera enforcement at a number of dangerous level crossings in the province.
A pilot project has already seen one camera installed at the White Road level crossing in Retreat.
The MEC says the introduction of a CCTV camera at the White Road crossing has seen a drastic reduction in incidents over the past two years.
The camera system forms part of a strategy between the Provincial Transport Department and Metrorail to better secure crossings and clamp down on vehicles dodging booms.
Carlisle says so far it's been a massive success.
"The number of transgressions there has dropped like a stone and what's very interesting is that just down the road is the Military Road crossing, where there's been very nice improvement."
Military Road and Muldersvlei crossings will soon have the technology installed.
