Dog fighting syndicate bust in Brakpan
The SPCA says a few dogs had to be put down at the scene.
CAPE TOWN - The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) has uncovered a large dog fighting syndicate in Brakpan on Gauteng's East Rand.
Police arrested 18 people after raiding the property in Tsakane on Sunday evening following an anonymous tip-off.
Fourteen dogs, some severely injured, were rescued.
A few dogs had to be put down at the scene.
The SPCA's Este Kotze said, "Cruelty charges have already been laid at the police station. The suspects appeared in court this morning."
In September, an Eyewitness News investigation revealed the lucrative sport is widespread with reports of R1.5 million wagered on a single fight in Rustenburg in the North West.
