Fire safety initiative lauched
A community upliftment initiative is trying to minimise the impact of informal settlement fires.
The initiative called South Africa Volunteer Experiences (Save) was launched earlier this week.
It aims to educate those living in informal settlements about fire safety procedures.
Fire extinguishers and individual training are also being handed out to selected communities.
The pilot programme was launched in Dunoon in the Western Cape
Save's Carla Ferreira said the response so far has been fantastic.
"We only expected between 20 to 50 people on the first day and we had almost 200 people - they didn't even have place to sit."
Ferreira added there are plans to expand the project.
