CAPE TOWN - Gary Kirsten will join the team as a batting mentor during the One Day International series against Pakistan.

The five match ODI series against Pakistan starts on Wednesday and Kirsten will join the squad for five days between the second and third games.

Proteas team manager, Dr Mohammed Moosajee, explained why they called the former coach to join the team for a few days.

"Gary is a World Cup winning coach and it would be naïve for us not to tap into his wisdom. We have a crop of young batsmen in the squad we feel will gain a lot of insight from his vast batting experience and knowledge.

"We are going into an important phase leading up to the World Cup so it will be important for us to tap into as many resources available to us as possible."

In other news from the UAE Dale Steyn will return back to South Africa as he is being rested for the first two ODI's.

He will join the squad for the remaining three One Day Internationals again as well as for the T20 series.

Hashim Amla is still awaiting the birth of his second child in South Africa and Colin Ingram has been placed on stand-by.

Ingram joins the squad on Monday and the first ODI is on Wednesday.
